Current thoughts on Residential Fire Protection

Need to discuss different smoke detectors and technologies that are available.  EX. Roost, NEST, LEEO, PhotoElectric, Ionization, Heat, Dual Sensor.  Also discuss monitoring and its benefits.  Discuss Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Propane/Natural Gas Detectors.

How are detectors tested and regulated: UL, FM, NFPA, CPSC

Current trends in Codes ie: California, Alaska, Mass. specifically Boston

Video Discussion Topics:

  1. History of Smoke Detectors
  2. Where to place detectors
  3. When Fires Occur
  4. When/Why to replace smoke detectors
  5. Which Kind to have and Why
  6. When to replace batteries
  7. Importance of Interconnect
  8. Reducing False Alarms, what the beeps mean once every 30 seconds means replace battery or smoke detector etc,
  9. EDITH

Thoughts on Ionization.  According to OPFD the filure rate of ionization increases by 3% Annually.  Ionization detectors use Americium 241 which is a byproduct of spent plutonium from Nuclear reACTORS.  Americium 241 has a half life of 480 years.  Used because it releases an Alpha particle at a predictable rate.  May be a cause for higher cancer rates in FFs due to release of radioactive material when devices are compromised by fire.  They have a high incidence of nuisance alarms.  They detect fine particles that alter the electrical flow.  For example cooking aerosols, steam etc.  1963 Ionization detectors discovered first one was made in Lakewood, CO by the Statitrol Company Model 700.  Received verbal Approval from UL in 1973.  The statitrol company was sold multiple times as follows.  Statitrol–Emerson–Amway–BRK–1st Alert.

In the 1980s LA County did research and stated the following: An individual was likely to die in a home fire if any of the following occured: 11% smoke density, Temp of 150 degrees F, 1000 PPM CO.  An ionization is set to go off at 7% smoke obscurity according to UL standard.
